Homestead Exemption

If the property is your primary home, you may be entitled to a homestead exemption, or if you are over age 65, or if you have some disability, you may be entitled to additional exemptions.

Step 1

To claim a homestead exemption, update your DL to reflect your new home address:

Select “Renew or Duplicate my Driver License, ID or Permit”
Follow the prompts.
Once complete, return to this page and proceeds with Step 2.

The ad valorem tax year in Alabama is from October 1 through September 30. You have until December 31st of the current year to assess your property for taxes if it was purchased prior to October 1st. Click on your county below to be taken to the County Tax Assessor’s office for your new home. Be sure to select the county where your new home is located. The following counties allow you to file a homestead exemption online (all other counties must visit their county’s Tax Assessor’s office in person):
